1.39bn Brits Listened to ‘California Gurls’

2010 CHART REWIND. Music Week and Nielsen Music recently presented stats on what songs got most airplay on UK radio last year. WelcheMusic first wrote about “California Gurls” back in July last year. Katy Perry collaborated with Snoop Dogg on the track, which topped the airplay chart for five weeks. It took a while to get there, Perry first entered the chart at No.119 and took eight weeks to reach the top. In total, “California Gurls” racked up 69,592 plays across the UK and won over Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro.” The latter has two singles inside the year-end top ten as “Bad Romance” was No.4.

Rumer Wants Forgiveness

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Née Sarah Jones in Islamabad, Pakistan, this 31 year old singer calls herself Rumer. Her name is taken from author and pen name Rumer Godden. The singer issued her debut album Seasons of My Soul last year. The set has already yielded two UK singles – “Slow” (No.16) and “Aretha.” The third cut to be issued might also be her biggest hit. “Am I Forgiven” already tops Music Week’s ranking of most played tracks on radio ahead of its release. WelcheMusic recommends anyone who likes The Carpenters to listen to her (and yes, The Guardian was first to point that out)!

Darwin Deez Is Purely Irresistible

CHART SPOTLIGHT. So, WelcheMusic has just discovered the irresistible track “Bad Day” from Darwin Deez. The group is named after its singer and has so far released an eponymous album. Going through this week’s singles releases, we stumbled upon this track and absolutely love it!

If you  do decide to check them out, don’t forget to listen to “Constellations” and “Radar Detector” which have charted on the UK indie tally. Upon hearing it, Darwin Deez deserves a far bigger audience and just listen to the lyrics! Hopefully they will also earn Stateside success since they’re actually American.

The Brits Like Aggro Santos

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Brazilian-born UK rapper Aggro Santos bows at No.8 on Sunday’s UK singles tally with “Like U Like.” Née Yuri Santos in October 1988, this young rapper first debuted early 2010 when “Candy” peaked at No.5. Last year, Aggro Santos participated in Britain’s Got Talent, ending up at sixth place.
