A Year Passed Since Tinie Tempah Passed Out

2010 CHART REWIND. Exactly one year has passed since Tinie Tempah vaulted into the top of the UK singles chart with “Pass Out.”  The British rapper included singer Labrinth on his debut hit, who also joined him on the follow-up track “Frisky.”

According to Music Week, then 21-year-old Londoner Patrick Okogwu was the first Parlophone recording act to open their career with a number one debut since 1999, when film director Baz Luhrmann’s “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” debuted atop of the singles chart.

Tinie Tempah’s pan-European breakthrough came with the Eric Turner collaboration “Written in the Stars.” That track also topped the UK singles chart last year. In addition, Tinie Tempah also joined Swedish House Mafia on “Miami 2 Ibiza” last year.

Tinie Tempah is currently charting with the Ellie Goulding collaboration “Wonderman,” the fifth single off his debut album Disc-Overy. This week, the Goulding collaboration reaches a new peak at No.12.

WelcheMusic notes that in Sweden, Tinie Tempah peaked at No.10 with both “Miami 2 Ibiza” and “Written in the Stars.”

Rihanna Graces Vogue Cover Nude

CHART REFLECTION. According to Celebs, the famous photographer Annie Leibowitz has shot new images of Rihanna where the singer goes nude – nude color, that is. The April issue of Vogue is definitely highly anticipated. Rihanna recently tweeted “Just wrapped my first American Vogue cover shoot with Annie Liebovitz… Rah! #SEXY.” She later deleted the tweet as Celebs comment, “[Rihanna] let the cat out of the bag too soon for Vogue’s liking!.

Despite being nominated for no less than five Grammy Awards last month, Rihanna and Eminem failed to win any of them with “Love the Way You Lie.” She had her revenge taking home the BRIT Award for Best International Female Artist!

Hugely successful, Rihanna currently charts with “S&M.” Not only controversial in its lyrics (UK radio station re-named the track “Come On”), the video was banned from YouTube and David LaChappelle claimed that content was too similar to his own shoots for Vogue Italia.

WelcheMusic notes that Rihanna unfortunately falls out of this week’s top ten as “S&M” drops 7-12 on the singles tally. The track has spent 16 weeks on the chart so far, since its debut last November. The track has topped the Australian singles chart and reached the top ten across the Nordics.

Black Eyed Peas Can’t Get Enough in Germany

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Following the global success of “The Time (Dirty Bit),” Black Eyed Peas returns to the charts with another single off The Beginning. Produced by will.i.am, DJ Ammo and Rodney Jerkins (who produced “Telephone” w/Gaga-Beyoncé), the track vaults into No.9 on the German singles chart this week. The track has so far peaked at No.38 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Black Eyed Peas is just behind Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3x” which bows at No.8. In a busy week, last week’s newcomer Lena drops 2-7 with “Taken by a Stranger.” Bruno Mars still remains at No.1 with “Grenade,” followed by Adele and Taio Cruz/Kylie Minogue.

Phil Collins Calls it Quits

CHART REWIND. Earlier this week, Phil Collins announced that he will retire. The 60- year old singer got his breakthrough in Genesis in the ‘70s, releasing his first solo album in 1981. A quick glance on the Swedish singles tally reveals that Collins managed to place two tracks at No.1 in his career. In 1981, he placed “In the Air Tonight” on top of the list only to return in 1989 when “Another Day in Paradise” made it to No.1. In total, eleven singles have charted by Phil Collins.

In terms of albums, four sets have topped the Swedish chart. It all began with Face Value (1981), followed by No Jacket Required (1985), …But Seriously (1989) and …Hits (1998).

Phil Collins have had far more successful chart runs in the US and the UK, but his career has struggled of late. In 2010, two singles were issued off his latest album Going Back. Neither “(Love Is Like a) Heatwave” nor “Going Back” made any significant impact chartwise.

WelcheMusic thinks one of his more original hits was the 2001 re-work of “In the Air Tonite.” Taken off the tribute album Urban Renewal, Lil’ Kim rapped her way through the track which peaked at No.26 in the UK and No.27 in Sweden. It was never released in the US. In 2003, rap group Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony sampled Collins’ “Take Me Home” on their hit “Home.” It finally made it to No.19 in the UK.
