Oprah Reunited Backstreet Boys

As Billboard previously reported, Oprah Winfrey managed to re-unite the Backstreet Boys on her “Teen Idol Extravaganza” earlier this week. Even Kevin Richardson, who left the band in 2006, made a welcome return performing the group’s biggest hit to date “I Want it That Way.” The band is expected to tour with NKOTB in 2011.

So far, Backstreet Boys never topped the Billboard Hot 100.  They peaked at No.2 with “Quit Playin’ Games (With My Heart)” in 1997. Their last album, This Is Us, produced two singles – “Straight through My Heart” and “Bigger.”

In an extremely slow week, the top nine positions are unchanged from last week. The first sign of change is Tinie Tempah’s jump from 13-10 with “Written in the Stars.” Tempah’s collaborated with Swedish House Mafia, who sits firmly at No.14 with “Miami 2 Ibiza.”

The highest new entry comes from Ke$ha, whose recent Hot 100 No.1 Debut “We R Who We R” bows at No.22. She beats the former US Hot 100 No.1 Far East Movement, whose “Like a G6” enters at No.47. The recent novelty hit “Barbra Streisand” bows at No.57, unable to surpass Pitbull’s new hit “Hey Baby,” which claims the No.51 spot in its first week.

According to Music Week, the singer will issue the new album Michael on Dec.14. This marks the first album with new material, since the singer’s death in 2009.

This March, Michael Jackson’s record label Sony Music signed a deal with the singer’s estate. To date, one album has been issued – This Is It, which sold 5m copies worldwide. The lead single failed to make any impact on the worldwide charts, to date it has only made the top five in Japan. The track peaked at No.18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Charts.

Michael will include the song “Breaking News,” which was recorded in New Jersey back in 2007. That track is already available on michaeljackson.com. The set was produced by Akon, RedOne and will.i.am amongst others.

Perhaps, some of the new tracks will appear in the new Cirque du Soleil show Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour. The first leg of the North American tour opens Oct.2 in Montreal, Canada.

To date, Michael Jackson’s Thriller remains the best-selling album of all times with approximately 110 millions copies old worldwide. Released in November 1982, the set spawned seven hit singles.
