Kelli-Leigh Returns to No.1 with I Wanna Feel

#ChartFact #House Yes, you’re absolutely right – it is Toni Braxton’s 1996 song ‘You’re Makin’ Me High’ that you constantly hear on the radio. And, yes – it’s the same singer who brought you Duke Damont’s ‘I Got You.’ Introducing Kelli-Leigh, the vocalist on SecondCity’s UK No.1 ‘I Wanna Feel.’

Kelli-Leigh is a songer/songwriter who introduced her first EP back in November 2011. As a session singer, she has provided backing vocals for Adele’s ’21’ tour as well as working with Leona Lewis.

Back to SecondCity, the Anglo-American DJ Rowan Harrington was born in Chicago back in 1987. In an interview with OfficialCharts.com, he says “I can’t believe my single, ‘I Wanna Feel,’ has gone to Number 1.” To date, ‘I Wanna Feel’ has sold more than 82,000 copies to take the No.1 spot.

Toni Braxton’s ‘You’re Makin’ Me High’ was originally issued at the end of May 1996. The track was written by Babyface and Bryce Wilson who also produced the single. It was the lead single off Braxton’s sophomore album Secrets, peaking at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It reached No.7 in the UK, which means that Kelli-Leigh bested Braxton’s original peak.

‘You’re Makin’ Me High’ was released as a double-A side single featuring the soundtrack cut ‘Let It Flow’ off the movie Waiting to Exhale. ‘You’re Makin’ Me High’ was followed by ‘Un-Break My Heart’ in October that year.

Expect an Allsång på Skansen Effect for Miriam Bryant

Miriam Bryant
Sweden’s Adele – Miriam Bryant – will perform on Tuesday’s Allsång på Skansen

Dubbed Sweden’s Adele, the 22-year old singer Miriam Bryant will perform on Tuesday’s edition of Allsång på Skansen*. The music program, hosted by pop singer Måns Zelmerlöw usually attracts a +1m audience and was covered in the WelcheMusic blog back in 2011.

With a voice that definitely captures any audience, Miriam Bryant earned a top 20 hit in Sweden earlier this year with ‘Push Play.’ Her first single via EMI Music**, the song preceded the debut album Raised in Rain. Both the single and the album peaked at No.12 upon their respective release.

Safe to say, a nationwide audience and a summer atmosphere I wouldn’t be surprised if Miriam Bryant elevates her success in the same way Melody Gardot did on Skavlan a few years back. Bryant’s career started with the debut single ‘Finders, Keepers’ via the record label 100 Songs last year. The track managed to climb the German radio charts and led to a sold-out club tour there.

Born in Gothenburg, Miriam Bryant’s father is British and mother Finnish. Her album is co-written and produced by childhood friend Victor Rådström.

‘Finders, Keepers’ is about a broken relationship and Miriam Bryant calls it ‘an angry love song’ about letting go in an interview with Aftonbladet ahead of the release of her debut album. In a recent interview, she reveals that no one but Bryant herself calls the shots. Everything from cover art to the script to the music video. Chatting with reporter Frida Söderlund, she’s proud of her achievements. The sold out club tour in Germany, awarded ‘Artist of the Week’ by MTV Iggy in the US and a No.4 hit on Swedish iTunes with ‘Push Play.’

She had a rough time and didn’t pass her major subject musical theater in upper secondary school. She felt alone, ugly and different. And she refused o sing, scared to disappoint people.

Miriam Bryant’s singing voice earned her a worldwide contract with EMI Music. Today part of the Universal Music group, I sincerely hope that she will get a well deserved international breakthrough. It’s her Allsång på Skansen premiere, and other guests this Tuesday are Danny Saucedo and Eurovision Song Contest winner Emmelie de Forest.

Azealia Banks on the Verge of Success in Europe with 212

Azealia Banks B-listed on BBC Radio 1
Azealia Banks beat Adele on the Pitchfork annual 2011 recap

‘212’ might be the breakthrough Azealia Banks deserves. I just discovered this track as it’s currently B listed on BBC Radio 1. Initially released last December, it has taken awhile to grow its fanbase in Europe. The track appeared on Pitchfork’s Top 100 Tracks of 2011 ahead of the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z and Adele. It’s dubbed ‘2012’ after the area code of Harlem where Azealia Banks grew up. It features the rapper Lazy Jay and has so far racked up more than 5.7m views on YouTube.

The Rumor Has It Adele Will Return to No.1

‘Rumour Has It’ latest track to bow from “21” set
Adele may return to No.1 with ‘Rumour Has It’

Expect ‘Rumour Has It’ to become British singer-songwriter Adele’s next Hot 100 chart-topping single when it’s released later this month. ‘Turning Tables’ charted following its inclusion in Glee (where Gwyneth Paltrow performed it), yet it was never officially released as an Adele single in the US. A bit disappointing if you ask me, the track was issued as a single in Italy and the Netherlands for instance.

Haven already placed ‘Rolling in the Deep,’ ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ atop the Billboard Hot 100, this new single has already started climbing US charts. I’ve blogged about Adele’s hugely successful “21” album ever since the countdown to the original release back in January 2011. Back then, ‘Rolling in the Deep’ had just been announced as the first new single preceding the set.

  • ‘The Rumour Has It’ topped the US Triple A chart one in week in August 2011
  • The song was released to mainstream radio in the UK last November
  • The Glee Cast has charted with a mash-up of ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘Rumour Has It,’ peaking at No.11 on the Hot 100
  • Co-writer and producer Ryan Tedder is the frontman of the pop rock band OneRepublic
