Glee Powers The Wanted’s Glad You Came into the Billboard Top 5

Glad You Came gets the help of Glee.
The Wanted vaults 23-5 with Glad You Came

The Wanted’s ‘Glad You Came’ takes a giant leap from 23 to 5 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, the highest peak ever for a UK boy band thanks to Glee performing it on their show. I first wrote about The Wanted in the blog post Boy Bands Return with a Vengeance as the UK Welcomes The Wanted in August 2010. Back then, I was convinced that master producer Steve Mac would succeed in putting yet another boy band on the map. I also wrote about ‘Glad You Came’ upon its release last July.

Fate never wanted Westlife and Boyzone to get US success

On the back of the likes of Westlife’s and Boyzone’s enormous success, fate never wanted them to become a Stateside story. Marrying The Wanted with Glee’s highly effective chart machine, ‘Glad You Came’ was featured in last week’s mid-season finale, headlined by the show’s Grant Gustin (as part of the show’s choir troupe the Warblers).

The Wanted sold 188,000 downloads according to Nielsen SoundScan, enough for the track to climb to No.3 on the Digital Songs chart. Glee’s cover also debuts on the chart, albeit lower (No.90 with 37,000 downloads sold).

The Wanted – Glad You Came

‘Glad You Came’ gets a 11% increase in radio listeners

In terms of airplay, ‘Glad You Came’ reached 45 million listeners (up 11%), reaching No.22 on the Radio Songs chart. It also broke into the top ten of the Pop Songs airplay chart, the mainstream top 40 being its base.

Written by Steve Mac, Wayne Hector and Ed Drewett, ‘Glad You Came’ succeeded ‘Gold Forever,’ becoming the group’s second No.1 hit in the UK and first chart-topper in native Ireland. It will be included on the US edition of the group’s eponymous debut. In Europe, it is included on the sophomore album “Battleground.”

‘Warzone’ latest UK single hit

The Wanted’s last single to chart in the UK was ‘Warzone,’ which peaked just outside the top twenty in the UK (No.21). The group is reported to have recorded the duet ‘Jealousy’ with Rihanna, yet it was scrapped and will not be released. Rumors say that it will be re-recorded with another vocalist.

Back to the Billboard Hot 100, ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)’ returned to the top spot, trailed by Adele’s ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ and fun.’s ‘We Are Young.’ Last week’s chart-topper ‘Part of Me’ (by Katy Perry) falls to No.4.

What Was Your Favorite Adele Moment of 2011?

Adele
Adele

Almost a year ago, I blogged about the anticipated release of Adele’s set 21. It sold more than 16 million copies worldwide which is remarkable. In the US, 21 had the biggest annual sales figure since Usher’s 2004 set Confessions. Three official singles have been lifted off Adele’s sophomore set, what was your favorite?

Adele – Rolling in the Deep

‘Rolling in the Deep’ was initially released at the end of November 2010, preceding the album. The song topped no less than four Billboard charts, including the Hot 100. It was also nominated for three Grammy awards. Despite spending almost a year on the Swedish singles tally (48 wks), it never reached the top ten peaking at No.11.

Adele – Someone Like You

The second single off 21 actually charted last January as many bought it as an à la carte download. Adele’s performance at the 2011 BRIT Awards sent the track from No.46 to No.1 in the UK, beating Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way.’ The single was the UK’s biggest seller of 2011. It initially bowed at No.57 in Sweden last June, not reaching its No.3 peak until September.

Adele – Set Fire to the Rain (Live at The Royal Albert Hall)

The power ballad ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ was released last July, missing out the top ten in the UK. It fared better in the US, peaking at No.7 on the Hot 100. It earned its biggest success in Belgium, where it became the No.5 best seller of 2011. It peaked at No.13 in Sweden.

I’m still waiting for 21 to appear on Spotify, to date only a selection of tracks has been made available.

Will Katy Perry Return to No.1 with The One That Got Away?

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Katy Perry has released yet another hit single from her Teenage Dream album. Again, Max Martin and Dr. Luke have written and produced ‘The One That Got Away’ which bows at No.22 on this week’s UK singles tally.

Just falling short of a top 20 position, Katy Perry is just behind Justin Bieber at No.21. Available in a range of remixes by the likes of 7th Heaven and JRMX,  the single has so far been unable to set the charts on fire in the US. To date, ‘The One That Got Away’ has peaked at No.94 on the Billboard Hot 100. Interesting to note, Katy Perry mashed her latest hit single with Adele’s No.1 hit ‘Someone Like You.’ See it below.

ESC Winner Carola to Crown The Voice

CHART REFLECTION. We covered the super diva Carola Häggkvist after her performance at ‘Sommarkrysset’ earlier this summer. According to Aftonbladet, the singer will join the celebrity judges of ‘The Voice.’ These sources have not been officially confirmed by TV4. The panel will consist of merited Swedish artists Magnus Uggla, Ola Salo (of The Ark) and rapper Petter.

‘The Voice’ is a Dutch format owned by Talpa. Earlier this autumn, TV3 introduced a similar format dubbed ‘True Talent.’ The purpose of the show is that it’s primarily the voice that matters and not the physical appearance. WelcheMusic favorite Danny Sacuedo is one of the celebrities in ‘True Talent.’

Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5’s Adam Levin, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton form the panel of judges in the US. In the UK, Adele was rumored to become one of the celebrities.
