Mary J. Blige Is Finally Back with 25/8

25-8
Mary J Blige's back with "25/8"

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Ok, I had to admit that I was sort of disappointed about David Guetta switching Mary J. Blige for Sia on ‘Titanium.’ But, rest assured Blige hasn’t given up on us. As My Life II…The Journey Continues (Act I) is slated for November release, the aforementioned ‘25/8’ saw its digital download release earlier this month. Produced and co-written by Eric Hudson who previously worked with Brandy, Trey Songs and Jamie Foxx, the track was initially performed live on Good Morning America.

Katy Perry’s Fireworks Set the Hot 100 on Fire

Issued at the end of October, Katy Perry’s “Firework” ascends to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The track is produced by the Norwegian production team Stargate and Sandy Vee. Stargate is currently responsible for the two Rihanna hits “Only Girl” and “What’s My Name?” as well as the recent Alexis Jordan hit “Happiness.” According to Billboard, this is the first time in 11 years that a female artist take three straight radio singles from an album to No.1 on the Billboard 100. The title track from Teenage Dream was a No.1 hit this summer,  and was preceded by “California Gurls” – the collaboration with Snoop Dogg. “Firework” has also topped the singles chart in New Zealand and reached No.3 in the UK, but failed to chart in Sweden.

In 1998-1999, Monica managed to pull off the same feat with “The Boy Is Mine” (with Brandy), “The First Night” and “Angel of Mine.”

Mars Retains Top Spot for a Fourth Consecutive Week

25-year old Bruno Mars holds on to the Billboard Hot 100 top spot for a fourth week in a row. Before breaking through as an artist, Mars had produced and written songs for Alexandra Burke, Travie McCoy, Adam Levine, Brandy, Sean Kingston and Flo Rida’s No.1 hit “Right Round.” His “Just the Way You Are” has already topped the charts in Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Holland and the UK. The track has so far reached No.6 in Sweden. In the US, the song has sold 1.697 million units since its release. His debut album Doo-Woops & Hooligans has already spawned a second hit – “The Lazy Song” debuts at this week’s No.82.

WelcheMusic looks forward to Taylor Swift’s upcoming album release Speak Now. The set follows Taylor Swift and Fearless, the latter a Billboard 200 album chart topper. Swift debuted back in 2006 with “Tim McGraw,” a top ten US Country hit. So far, her biggest US hit is “You Belong with Me” – a No.2 hit in 2008. Internationally, “Love Story” is considered her biggest hit. Back in August, “Mine” was a No.3 hit – the first track to be lifted off the Speak Now set. The title track vaults in at No.8 this week.

Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World)” rebounds 8-6 in its fifth week. Kanye West opens at No.12 with “Runaway,” one of his highest debuts ever. UK chart topper Cee Lo Green finally cracks the top 20 as “F**k You” moves 21-18 in its seventh week. P!nk is back on the chart with “Raise Your Glass,” which is lifted from her compilation Greatest Hits…So Far!!!.” The track had simultaneous releases on both radio and retail and immediately reached No.51 on the Billboard Hot 100.

60s Star Denies Secures Swedish No.1 Position

The Swedish pop musician, record company manager and concert promoter Hans Edler made his breakthrough in the 1960s, but has been denied mainstream commercial success. Only two of his albums have made it to the charts, Jukebox Graffiti 2 spent one week at No.46 back in 1978 while Remember the Sixties made it all the way to No.8 in June 2009. This fall, Edler presents a rock gala tribute to Elvis Presley with old-time Swedish ‘60s artists such as Little Gerhard, Rock-Ragge and The Adventures.

In times when Shakira, Rihanna and Robyn rule the charts it’s a quite a surprise that Hans Edler manages to spend a second week atop the singles chart with a Ricky Nelson tribute. “Black Fender” was initially performed in December 2006 during his “Hans Edler Meets Ricky Nelson” tour. Due to public demand, the track was finally released as a single following the overwhelming response as a crowd pleaser.

Shakira remains at No.2 with “Waka Waka,” followed by Eminem/Rihanna and Robyn. Oskar Linnros rebounds 7-5 with “Från och med du,” while UK/US chart topper Bruno Mars finally cracks the top ten with “Just the Way You Are.” Cee Lo Green’s “F**k You!” is also new to the top ten, moving 12-10. The singer made his breakthrough as one half of the pop group Gnarls Barkley. Upon its release, their debut hit “Crazy.” Cee Lo Green is expected to top the UK singles chart this Sunday, based on mid-week sales and the track receives most airplay in on UK radio.

Cloth brand Lindex use of Marina & The Diamonds’ “I Am Not a Robot”  has propelled the track from 53-28-13-11. The Welsh singer-songwriter received her breakthrough on the BBC Sound of 2010, where promising new acts are highlighted. The track only made it to No.26 in her native UK, but has cracked the top ten in Norway.

Manchester Duo Hurts Grace Grey’s Anatomy Trailer

On Oct.6, Grey’s Anatomy will return to Swedish TV screens for a complete new season. The ABC TV show has already premiered in the States. A trailer is currently showcased on cable network Kanal 5 and the TV campaign is also part of Sony Music’s promotional efforts for Manchester duo Hurts. The group debuted with the single “Better than Love” before the summer.

The track was primarily a hit on the clubs, while radio picked up “Wonderful Life.” The video has currently tracked 4m views on YouTube. “Stay” will be issued commercially later this year but is already picking up a lot of interest due to it being the soundtrack to the Grey’s promo trailer. It is already the second most played Hurts track on Spotify. Hurts also performed at the Propaganda festival this August and will return to Debaser Medis Stockholm this October.

Lady Gaga+Yoko Ono=True

Lady Gaga showed off her bottom, wearing a bejeweled catsuit when she performed on stage with Yoko Ono. The singers joined the stage at the We Are Plastic Ono Band concert at the LA’s Orpheum Theatre. Surprisingly, this was the first time Ono had made a concert in L.A. and the event was part of a series of celebrations for John Lennon who would have celebrated 70 this week! On Thursday, the movie Nowhere Boy starring Aaron Johnson premiered at the Egyptian Theatre.

Yoko Ono has topped the U.S. Dance Singles chart twice this year with “Give Me Something” and “Wouldnit (I’m a Star).”

Will Beyoncé Return Soon?

Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins was the hottest producer awhile back when hits such as Whitney Houston’s “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay,” Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name” and Brandy & Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” ruled the charts. Now he’s reportedly in the studio with Beyoncé, working on new material which is scheduled to be released sometime later this year. Released in October 2008, her I Am…Sasha Fierce album spawned eight hit singles. Some were only released in certain territories. “Broken-Hearted Girl” was never officially issued in the US, but charted anyways due to strong downloads. Rodney Jerkins co-wrote and produced the upcoming Lady Gaga single “Telephone,” where Beyoncé sings guest vocals.
