Grenade Secures Lead in Sweden

CHART SPOTLIGHT. “Grenade” takes a giant leap from 10-1 on this week’s Swedish singles tally. This finally puts Bruno Mars on top in Sweden as “Just the Way You Are” peaked at No.2 in October last year. His Doo-wops & Hooligans album is yet to appear on the album chart.

By topping the Swedish sales chart, this means that Mars adds his eighth territory, including the important UK and US singles charts. He is still retaining the top spot in our neighbor country Norway where he succeeded Duck Sauce’s “Barbra Streisand.”

Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ Was Spot On

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Back in December, WelcheMusic flagged that Jessie J would become an artist to look out for in 2011. Her debut hit “Do It Like a Dude” managed to climb all the way to No.2, although it only bowed at No.25 back in November last year.

Her new single “Price Tag” features B.o.B. and is produced by mastermind Dr. Luke (currently charting with Britney). The American rapper-songwriter/producer B.o.B had already racked up no less than three UK No.1 hits with “Nothin’ On You” (feat. Bruno Mars), “Airplanes” (feat. Hayley Williams) and “Magic” (feat. Rivers Cuomo). His last single “I’ll Be in the Sky” only managed to reach No.61 in the UK chart so this a welcome return to the top.

The release of “Price Tag” also marks the debut of the simultaneous radio/retail arrival declared by Universal and Sony last month. This means that there will be no window between a track being offered to radio stations and available as a download.

Jessie J’s “Do It Like a Dude” remains a strong seller, falling 6-7 on this week’s chart. Born in March 1988, the singer’s real name is Jessica Ellen Cornish. Expect her debut album Who You Are to bow in stores at the end of March.

Bruno Mars Takes Doo Wops & Hooligans to the Top

CHART SPOTLIGHT. It might not have come as a surprise. Bruno Mars already topped the UK singles tally with “Just the Way You Are (Amazing)” and retains the No.1 spot for a second week running with “Grenade.” WelcheMusic finds him hotter than an oven, and this week Doo Wops & Hooligans crashes in at No.1 on the album chart as well. Bruno Mars has already conquered The Netherlands and Ireland with this album. He is still to reach the very top in the US besting the No.3 peak.

One of Japan’s most important radio station has already picked up the Coldplay-flavoured track “Marry You.” According to Music Week, Bruno Mars became the most successful songwriter in the UK last year as part of the songwriting team The Smeezingtons. The production trio not only wrote and produced Mars’s “Just the Way You Are (Amazing),” they’re also responsible for Cee-Lo Green’s “Forget You.” Mars and his songwriting collective scored three UK No 1’s last year beginning with “Nothin’ on You” by B.o.B featuring Mars, followed by “Just the Way You Are (Amazing)” and “Forget You.” Additional hits also include “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy and K’naan’s World Cup Song “Wavin’ Flag.”

Britney Spears Unable to Replicate Stateside Success

CHART SPOTLIGHT. While Britney Spears broke several records on the Billboard charts, the singer was unable to replicate the success in the UK. On the singles chart, published on Sunday evening, Spears’s “Hold It Against Me” bows at No.6.

The chart sported no less than five new entries, but none was able to unseat Bruno Mars’s “Grenade” which retains the top spot. Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” vaults in at No.2, the track has been the most played track on UK radio, of those yet to be released. As WelcheMusic already reported, Diddy’s “Coming Home” bows at No.4 ahead of the grime act Wretch 32 whose “Traktor” beat Britney Spears by a margin, ending up at No.5.
