Waka Waka Soon Turns One Year

2010 CHART REWIND. Don’t be surprised if Shakira will celebrate her one year anniversary on the Swedish singles tally with “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).” Featuring the South African afro-fusion band Freshlyground, the single initially charted on May.21st last year at No.18.  Facing an initially struggle, the track finally cracked the top ten in June. As WelcheMusic dutifully reported, “Waka Waka” finally ascended to the top last August. It finally dropped out of the top ten in December after a half year (!).

The track falls 42-41 this week and should be able to add another five weeks. The Colombian singer managed to succeed this chart success with “Loca,” which made No.20 last year. “Waka Waka” is by far Shakira’s biggest success in Sweden, beating the No.1 hit “Whenever Wherever” which spent 30 weeks on the tally in 2002. Surprisingly, her global hit “Hips Don’t Lie” only made it to No.45.

Two additional singles have been lifted off Shakira’s latest set Sale el Sol – the title track as well as “Rabiosa.”
