Adele Single-Handily Makes Up for Albums Dip

CHART SPOTLIGHT. According to MusicWeek, one out of ten albums sold in the UK was Adele’s. Her amazing performance helped  the whole market to survive a slump. Her 21 album still tops the UK album chart, while Adele’s debut 19 resurged in sales. In total, 2.22m copies were shifted in the first quarter resulting in a 1.5% growth year-on-year. Subtracting Adele’s figures, the record market would drop 8.7% year-on-year instead. WelcheMusic will keep a close eye on the development.

Not since Dire Straits’ 1986 set Brothers in Arms, an album has spent that many weeks atop the album chart in the UK.

BRIT Awards Performance Gives Adele Her First UK No.1

CHART SPOTLIGHT. The recent performance at the 2011 BRIT Awards certainly paid off for Adele whose “Someone Like You” bows atop the singles chart this Sunday. Back in January, WelcheMusic started the countdown to the release of 21. This follows “Rolling in the Deep” which peaked at No.2 earlier this year.  “Deep” remains on the singles chart, moving 5-4.

The ballad tells the tale of a relationship that has broken down. Adele’s performance at the BRIT Awards was so emotional that she broke down in tears. A live version of the track was also released via iTunes, which topped the download sales chart within 24 hours ahead of the album version.

In Sweden, Adele has had two entries on the singles tally. “Chasing Pavements” reached No.37 in 2008 while “Rolling in the Deep” peaked at No.46 last November.

Back to the singles chart, last week’s No.1 Jessie J drops to No.2 with “Price Tag.” Lady Gaga remains at No.3 with “Born This Way.”

Lady Gaga Destined for US No.1

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Lady Gaga is set to top the Hot 100 tomorrow, making it the 1,000th No.1 single in the History of the chart. “Born This Way” is also the title off her third studio album, which is scheduled for release on May 23. Sources say that “Born This Way,” which has been compared to Madonna’s “Express Yourself,” sold more than 450,000 downloads within its first three days of release since Friday 11th March. WelcheMusic expects the track to make a high debut on the Swedish chart later this week.

Britney Spears sold 411,000 downloads when she debuted atop the Hot 100 with “Hold It Against Me” four weeks ago. Flo Rida’s “Right Round” sold 636,000 in its first week of release; Black Eyed Peas’s “Boom Boom Pow” (465,000); and, third: Flo Rida’s “Low” (460,000) according to Billboard Biz.

Lady Gaga bowed at No.3 in the UK on Sunday, after just a few days of availability. She was beaten by Chipmunk’s “Champion” and chart-topper Jessie J.

Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ Was Spot On

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Back in December, WelcheMusic flagged that Jessie J would become an artist to look out for in 2011. Her debut hit “Do It Like a Dude” managed to climb all the way to No.2, although it only bowed at No.25 back in November last year.

Her new single “Price Tag” features B.o.B. and is produced by mastermind Dr. Luke (currently charting with Britney). The American rapper-songwriter/producer B.o.B had already racked up no less than three UK No.1 hits with “Nothin’ On You” (feat. Bruno Mars), “Airplanes” (feat. Hayley Williams) and “Magic” (feat. Rivers Cuomo). His last single “I’ll Be in the Sky” only managed to reach No.61 in the UK chart so this a welcome return to the top.

The release of “Price Tag” also marks the debut of the simultaneous radio/retail arrival declared by Universal and Sony last month. This means that there will be no window between a track being offered to radio stations and available as a download.

Jessie J’s “Do It Like a Dude” remains a strong seller, falling 6-7 on this week’s chart. Born in March 1988, the singer’s real name is Jessica Ellen Cornish. Expect her debut album Who You Are to bow in stores at the end of March.
