204 Million Viewers Saw The Eurovision Song Contest 2016 – New Record

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest reached more than 200 million viewers, a new record. SVT’s updated voting procedure one of the key factors behind the success, experts say.

As the super show made its comeback to Sweden, five million viewers were added to last year’s figure. No less thanks to Måns Zelmerlöw and Petra Mede.

“We’re thrilled that the Eurovision continues to grow. We’re excited to reach younger demographics,” says the executive producer Martin Österdahl adding that the team has worked hard on making the format look modern.
The final on May 14^th attracted on average 36.3 percent of the viewers across 40 countries. It’s more than double the viewership an ordinary Saturday night (15.7 percent) for the channels.

Eurovision was also popular in the younger demographics, on average 42.2 percent of the 15-24 year olds watched the broadcasted final in the 40 countries. That’s four times the average viewership in the key demographic (10.4 percent).

In Sweden, 3.7 million viewers tuned in – the highest figure for an ESC since 2000, when it was held in the Stockholm Globe Arena as well.

How Justin Timberlake Ended up in Eurovision

Justin Timberlake certainly made an impact in Saturday’s Eurovision. According to Swedish news daily Expressen, the singer will stay in Sweden for 30 days. Timberlake spent his Monday at Max Martin’s, who enjoyed his 22^nd Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling.’ His manager Johnny Wright explains why Justin Timberlake chose to appear in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Max Martin and Shellback co-wrote the global No.1with Justin Timberlake. “We love Sweden. During the *NSYNC days, our hits were recorded there,” has Johnny Wright previously stated. It comes as no surprise that Timberlake is picky of where he appears for promotion.

We brainstormed and realized that the Eurovision is one of the world’s greatest shows.

“Justin is a global, international artist. He understands the various platforms around the world. Justin is very picky about what TV shows he appears in. But Eurovision is all about new music. We sent the idea to them. They loved it. We looked for opportunities around the world. Justin is doing promotion at the moment. We brainstormed and realized that the Eurovision is one of the world’s greatest shows. It was a challenge for us since they never had an artist appear on the show that doesn’t compete. But further to our discussion, everything was sorted out,” says Johnny Wright about the guest appearance.

Last week’s No.1 The Common Linnets drops to No.21 with ‘Calm After the Storm.’ Last week’s runner-up – Conchita Wurst’s ‘Rise Like a Phoenix’ – also drops like a stone, falling 2-19. It seems as if the Eurovision Song Contest finally’s fading off.

John Legend’s ‘All of Me,’ regains 5-2, followed by Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’ at No.3. The talent show winner Jon Henrik Fjällgren’s ‘Daniel’s Joik’ is the highest new entry at No.5, while Robyn & Röyksopp place their second entry at No.7 with ‘Sayit.’

Exactly a year ago, last year’s Eurovision winner Emmelie De Forest’s ‘Only Teardrops’ topped the tally followed by Margaret Berger’s ‘I Feed You My Love,’ another ESC entry. Daft Punk feat. Pharrrell Williams was held the bronze position. The highest new entry then was Iida’s Life Will Kill You at No.7.

The Lonely Island/Michael Bolton Go All Jack Sparrow in Hit Viral

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Don’t be surprised if the 58-year old crooner Michael Bolton returns to the charts with an r’n’b hit. Featured in a recent Saturday Night Live episode, Bolton joins The Lonely Island in a parody of The Pirates of the Caribbean dubbed as “Jack Sparrow.”

14-year Chart Hiatus

If “Jack Sparrow” should chart, this would bring Michael Bolton back to the Billboard Hot 100 after a 14-year old hiatus. Bloggers The Random and The Wrap were quick on highlighting this successful viral which tributes several of this summer’s blockbusters.

Despite releasing albums since 1975, Michael Bolton didn’t get his breakthrough until the late ‘80s. Interesting to note, his blockbuster hit “How Am I Supposed to Be without You” was actually written for Laura Branigan back in 1983. A No.12 hit in the US, Michael Bolton actually co-wrote the track which he re-recorded for his Soul Provider album in 1989.

Career Highlight

Via his web-site Michael Bolton says “Jack Sparrow” ”was one of the highlights of my career and most memorable experiences of my life.” Last Sunday, the video attracted more than 4.3 million views on YouTube.

“Jack Sparrow” is included on the The Lonely Island’s latest album Turtleneck & Chain. It’s the sixth single to be lifted off the album, following the title track. The biggest hit to date off the set is “I Just Had Sex” which featured Akon on vocals.

The album also features collaborations from Beck, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Nicki Minaj and John Waters.

In Sweden, The Lonely Island peaked at No.2 with “I Just Had Sex.” Michael Bolton has had two top ten hits in Sweden. “How Am I Supposed to Live without You” and “How Can We Be Lovers?” in 1989.
