Glee Powers The Wanted’s Glad You Came into the Billboard Top 5

Glad You Came gets the help of Glee.
The Wanted vaults 23-5 with Glad You Came

The Wanted’s ‘Glad You Came’ takes a giant leap from 23 to 5 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, the highest peak ever for a UK boy band thanks to Glee performing it on their show. I first wrote about The Wanted in the blog post Boy Bands Return with a Vengeance as the UK Welcomes The Wanted in August 2010. Back then, I was convinced that master producer Steve Mac would succeed in putting yet another boy band on the map. I also wrote about ‘Glad You Came’ upon its release last July.

Fate never wanted Westlife and Boyzone to get US success

On the back of the likes of Westlife’s and Boyzone’s enormous success, fate never wanted them to become a Stateside story. Marrying The Wanted with Glee’s highly effective chart machine, ‘Glad You Came’ was featured in last week’s mid-season finale, headlined by the show’s Grant Gustin (as part of the show’s choir troupe the Warblers).

The Wanted sold 188,000 downloads according to Nielsen SoundScan, enough for the track to climb to No.3 on the Digital Songs chart. Glee’s cover also debuts on the chart, albeit lower (No.90 with 37,000 downloads sold).

The Wanted – Glad You Came

‘Glad You Came’ gets a 11% increase in radio listeners

In terms of airplay, ‘Glad You Came’ reached 45 million listeners (up 11%), reaching No.22 on the Radio Songs chart. It also broke into the top ten of the Pop Songs airplay chart, the mainstream top 40 being its base.

Written by Steve Mac, Wayne Hector and Ed Drewett, ‘Glad You Came’ succeeded ‘Gold Forever,’ becoming the group’s second No.1 hit in the UK and first chart-topper in native Ireland. It will be included on the US edition of the group’s eponymous debut. In Europe, it is included on the sophomore album “Battleground.”

‘Warzone’ latest UK single hit

The Wanted’s last single to chart in the UK was ‘Warzone,’ which peaked just outside the top twenty in the UK (No.21). The group is reported to have recorded the duet ‘Jealousy’ with Rihanna, yet it was scrapped and will not be released. Rumors say that it will be re-recorded with another vocalist.

Back to the Billboard Hot 100, ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)’ returned to the top spot, trailed by Adele’s ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ and fun.’s ‘We Are Young.’ Last week’s chart-topper ‘Part of Me’ (by Katy Perry) falls to No.4.

David Guetta Tops UK singles tally where Gotye and Lana Del Rey is on the Rise

David Guetta and Sia top the UK singles tally this week with ‘Titanium.’ A worldwide hit, I’ve already blogged about Mary J. Blige recording a demo version of the track. It also turns out that Katy Perry was offered the track as well. Guetta’s album “Nothing But the Beat” moves 16-9 on the album chart, where Lana Del Rey’s “Born to Die” reigns.

I’ve already covered the highest new entry Alyssa Reid, whose ‘Alone Again’ bows at No.2. Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ moves 7-3 on its fifth week. The Belgian-Australian singer managed to get the one of last year’s biggest hit across the globe. Its success began last July, and a cover by Canadian group Walk Off Earth has also spawned widespread success as the video shows five people playing the guitar simultaneously.  It recently cracked the top twenty in Sweden.

Lana Del Rey’s single ‘Born to Die’ (No.9) cracks the top ten, while her album bows atop the album chart. The preceding single ‘Video Games’ moves 20-17 in its 16th week. The only other new entry this week is R.I.O’s whose ‘Turn This Club Around’ bows at No.36. German dance group. It has already topped the singles chart in Switzerland, hitting the top ten in Austria and Germany as well. It was released back in September 2011. It’s the first entry from R.I.O. ever in the UK.

Bret Easton Ellis Praises Robyn

Robyn

We’re Swedes and we’re so proud of Robyn who rocked U.S. living rooms in Saturday Night Live this weekend. According to Aftonbladet, my favorite author Bret Easton Ellis loved the performance. On Saturday, Robyn performed ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ and ‘Dancing on My Own’ in the show. Host of the night was Katy Perry, whom Robyn toured with.

Bret Easton Ellis tweeted that Robyn probably was the best artist of this season and confessed that he’s listened to the singer’s Body Talk album for a year.

Snow Patrol Goes Katy Perry on Last Friday Night Cover

Oh, no they didn’t? A cover of Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)’ performed by the Scottish alternative rock band Snow Patrol has surfaced online. Included on Perry’s hugely successful album Teenage Dream, the track was issued as a single back in June this year.

I’ve blogged quite a bit about Snow Patrol. One of my favorite tracks of this year is ‘Called Out in the Dark.’ Suggestions say that ‘New York’ will be the next single, but this is yet to be confirmed.

In addition, Atlanta-based rock band Woe, Is Me issued their own version of ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)’ only this November. Included on the compilation Punk Goes Pop 4, it was the second song to be released as a single following Pierce the Veil’s version of ‘Just the Way You Are.’
