Flashback: Bruce Springsteen Prevented Bette Midler from Recording Pink Cadillac

Time for a flashback. Back  in 1988, Natalie Cole sent the Bruce Springsteen track “Pink Cadillac” to No.5 on the Billboard Hot 100. It even made it to No.1 on the dance chart in a remix signed by Clivillés & Cole. The real surprise was to find out that Springsteen actually vetoed a Bette Midler cover back in 1983. Midler had recorded her own version of the track on her No Frills record. Springsteen’s veto meant that she had to record another track for her album – her classic “Beast of Burden.”

Still, “Miss You Like Crazy” (1989) remains one of Cole’s biggest hits to date. The track peaked at No.7 in the US and No.2 in the UK. Cole has not issued a new album since 2006, while Springsteen on the other hand released the 2-CD set “The Promise” last week.
