Roxette Achieves UK Top 40 Hit and Beats J.Lo

CHART SPOTLIGHT. UK radio programmers have embraced Roxette as “She’s Got Nothing On (But the Radio)” achieves Top 40 status in its first week. The new single bows at No.32 on the UK Radio Airplay Chart this week with an audience reach of 20.85m people.

In addition, Roxette bows at No.4 on the Pre-Release chart which count downs the most popular tracks ahead of their commercial release. That chart is topped by The Wanted’s “Gold Forever,” which WelcheMusic predicts will bow atop of the singles chart come Sunday.

The Wanted is followed by Eliza Doolittle’s latest “Mr Medicine” and Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger’s “Don’t Hold Your Breath.” Roxette manages to beat Taylor Swift and even Jennifer Lopez’ “On the Floor.”

This hopefully will bed for a comeback to the singles tally, where Roxette hasn’t been present since 2005. The duo peaked at No.18 in a remix of “Fading Like a Flower” credited Dancing DJ’s vs. Roxette.

The Wanted Goes Comic Relief with Gold Forever

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Singing the official Comic Relief song has become a surefire way of getting a UK No.1. Since 1995, only one hit single has failed to reach the summit – The Saturdays’ “Just Can’t Get Enough.” It would come as a surprise if The Wanted was denied the No.1 position. WelcheMusic thinks the infectious hit “Gold Forever” sounds like the perfect blend between Alphaville’s “Forever Young” and Katy Perry’s “Firework.”

The official 2011 Comic Relief song is slated for release on March 14, but you can see the video via Directlyrics pop blog.

The Comic Relief charity was initiated by comedy scriptwriters Richard Curtis and Alexander Mendis back in 1985, being characterized by the Red Nose Day. The following songs have been released as official Comic Relief songs since 1986 (peak pos.):

  • 1986 – Cliff Richard and the cast of The Young Ones: Living Doll (1)
  • 1987 – Mel Smith & Kim Wilde: Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (3)
  • 1989 – Bananarama & La na nee nee noo noo: Help!  (3)
  • 1991 – Hale and Pace: The Stonk (1)
  • 1992 – Smear Campaign: (I Want to Be) Elected (9)
  • 1993 – Right Said Fred: Stick It Out (4)
  • 1994 – Absolutely Fabulous: Absolutely Fabulous (6)
  • 1995 – Cher, Chrissie Hynde, Neneh Cherry & Eric Clapton: Love Can Be a Bridge (1)

The Goo Goo Doll’s ‘Iris’ Returns

CHART REWIND. John Rzeznik wrote “Iris” for the soundtrack to the 1998 film City of Angels starring Nicolas Cage. Rzeznik’s group The Goo Goo Dolls chose to include it on its sixth album Dizzy Up the Girl which amassed more than 3m in worldwide record sales.

“Iris” was no less than a chart sensation as it spent a record 18 weeks at No.1 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart in 1998. That beats No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” (1996-1997) and Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” (2005) who spent 16 weeks atop the airplay chart.

So, how come it never made it higher than No.9 on the Hot 100? That’s because it wasn’t allowed to chart on the Hot 100 as it was never released as a physical single (that was long before the legal downloads). It bowed on the chart and peaked at No.9 when Billboard revised its chart policy in 1998. It, however, managed to top the Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Despite becoming such a huge US hit, it never reached the UK top 20 peaking at No.26.  WelcheMusic still hasn’t figured out why. Boyzone lead singer  Ronan Keating took “Iris” to No.12, thus beating the original peak of Goo Goo Dolls.

And now, another boy band has covered the track. The Wanted performed “Iris” on The Sun’s concert sessions the other week.

The Wanted Lost Their Minds in 2010

2010 CHART REWIND. It all looked very promising as WelcheMusic cheered The Wanted’s chart career. “All Time Low” crushed all competition and landed the No.1 spot in a beat, while “Heart Vacancy” bowed at No.2. The UK welcomed the latest boy band with open arms. Something  happened, however, when the third single was released. Despite performing their last hit single “Lose My Mind” on The X Factor, the song entered at No.29 – an all time low for the band. This week it moves 29-19. In Ireland, the single peaked at No.43.

WelcheMusic is still impressed with the lineup of producers for this track. Rami’s discography includes Backstreet Boys’ “Shape of My Heart,” Britney Spears’s “…Baby One More Time” and *NSync’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.” Carl Falk has worked with Glee’s Matthew Morrison and Westlife while The Wideboys remixed tracks for Enrique Iglesias, Cheryl Cole and Katy Perry.

WelcheMusic still thinks that The Wanted makes excellent poppy tunes and knows that there are plenty of tracks off the debut album deserving to become pop singles.

UPDATE 02-05: The Wanted will launch the 2011 Comic Relief single – bound for a No.1 position.
