Nicole Scherzinger Returns to the Charts with Mohombi

CHART SPOTLIGHT. The new hit single “Coconut Tree” leapfrogs the Swedish singles tally moving 44-10 in its second week. Performed by Swedish-Congolese R&B singer-songwriter Mohombi, the track features Nicole Scherzinger on guest vocals.

Scherzinger recently topped the UK singles chart with “Don’t Hold Your Breath,” which is yet to chart in this country. Her biggest hit to date is the 2007 hit “Scream” together with Timbaland.

Mohombi is the first artist to be signed to producer RedOne’s own label, the singer has already released three singles. The debut hit “Bumpy Ride” charted across Europe, topping the Dutch singles chart. The track peaked at No.6. “Miss Me” featured US rapper Nelly, while Mohombi collaborated with Akon on “Dirty Situation.” The four singles are all included on the debut album MoveMeant.

Swedes Take Nicole Scherzinger to UK No.1 Spot

CHART SPOTLIGHT. The two Swedish producers Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk take ex-Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger to the top of the UK singles chart this week. “Don’t Hold Your Breath” is Scherzinger’s 16th hit. According to Music Week, all of them were Top 20 hits.

A demo of the track was recorded by Keri Hilson and Timbaland, but it wasn’t officially released.

Pussycat Dolls managed to place two hits at No.1 – “Don’t Cha” and “StickWitU.” Yesterday saw the release of Scherzinger’s debut album Killer Love, which had already rendered two singles.  The Enrique Iglesias collaboration “Heartbeat” peaked at No.8, while “Poison” reached No.3.

Back to the Swedes. Rami Yacoub is no stranger to chart success. In 1998, he co-wrote “…Baby One More Time” with Max Martin. Rami has produced artists such as Backstreet Boys, Céline Dion and Enrique Iglesias. Carl Falk has worked with artists such as The Wanted, Jennifer Rush, Nick Carter and Westlife.

Far East Movement Goes Rocketeer with Ryan Tedder

CHART REFLECTION. The L.A. based Asian American electro hop quartet Far East Movement is set follow-up the UK No.4 hit “Like a G6.” Featuring Ryan Tedder as guest vocalist, “Rocketeer” has already managed to peak at No.7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The track is lifted off the debut set Free Wired (which peaked at No.24 in the US) and is produced by the two teams The Smeezingtons and Stereotypes. It so happens that the track was later sampled by Justin Bieber on “Somebody to Love” which was also produced by Stereotypes.

Although Bruno Mars actually co-wrote the track, it’s Ryan Tedder who sings the vocals. He’s the frontman of OneRepublic (most famous for “Apologize” w/Timbaland), but also a prolific songwriter. In 2008, he wrote “Bleeding Love” for Leona Lewis.

Far East Movement has also burnt the dancefloors in the UK with Roger Sanchez with “2Gether.” Sampling B-52s “Love Shack,” the track is also set for digital release later this spring.

In Sweden, Far East Movement peaked at No.7 with “Like a G6.” The track featured DEV and The Cataracs. “Rocketeer” is currently sitting at No.14 in the US. According to Last.FM, one of the most popular tracks is “Girls on the Dance Floor” (featuring the Stereotypes). WelcheMusic wouldn’t be surprised if this will be the next single.

Update 02-21: Far East Movement’s  “Rocketeer” bowed at No.14 on Sunday’s UK singles tally.

Keri Hilson Does Not Allow Boys

WelcheMusic looks forward to the upcoming Keri Hilson album “No Boys Allowed” to bow on Dec.21 via Mosley Music and Zone 4 Records. The set features tracks produced by names such as Timbaland, Ne-Yo, Danja (Nelly Furtado, Whitney Houston) and Jerry Duplessis (Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys).  Two tracks have already surfaced ahead of the release.  This September, Hilson issued “Breaking Point” which re-united her with Timbaland. The single was issued as a digital download peaking at the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at No.44.

“Breaking Point” was followed by “Pretty Girl Rock,” which peaked at No.72 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It also made the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, peaking at No.40. An official remix is available with contributions from Kanye West. “Pretty Girl Rock” was produced by Ne-Yo and Chuck Harmony.

Hopefully, the album release will spark some fire into Keri Hilson’s career. Her last album In a Perfect World… was preceded by no less than three Billboard Hot 100 hits, including the No.3 hit “Knock You Down” (featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo). Last year, Keri Hilson recorded “I Like” as part of the soundtrack to the German movie Zweiohrküken (Chicken with Two Ears). The song became her biggest hit ever in Germany, reaching No.1 in December last year. The song also reached the UK Top 40 following the TV adverts for 90210 in April this year.

Despite not being officially released as a single, a video was made for “Make Love” featuring Kanye West as Hilson’s love interest.  According to Last.FM, the most popular tune from Keri Hilson is “Knock You Down” followed by “Energy” and “I Like.”
