Olly Murs Returns to the Charts

The English singer-songwriter Olly Murs will lift a second single off his self-titled debut album. The set was preceded by the UK No.1 “Please Don’t Let Me Go,” which was released in August this year. The second single will be “Thinking of Me,” which will be out on Nov.22. Murs finished second on X-Factor last year and on the album, he has collaborated with veteran producers John Shanks, Wayne Hector and Mark Taylor. On a private note, the singer’s career has cost him the relationship with his brother. They fell out following Olly’s missing his twin brothers wedding in order to perform for the judges.

(Update 13/3): This week, Olly Murs bows at No.20 with “Heart on My Sleeve.” It’s the second single off the Olly Murs album. The track is written by singer-songwriter James Morrison and prolific producer John Shanks. The original version was recorded by the American Idol contestant Michael Johns for his post-Idol album Hold Back My Heart. The track made the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, finally peaking at No.22.

David Guetta Re-activates Album with Rihanna

David Guetta’s album One Love saw the light of day in August 2009. To date, the set has yielded no less than five singles. The set will be re-issued this November and include a brand new track featuring Rihanna. “Who’s That Chick?” is currently featured in an ad campaign for Doritos.

Released in April last year, “When Love Takes Over” was the hit that preceded the album. Featuring lead vocals by Kelly Rowland, the track topped the charts in Belgium, Czech Republic, Switzerland and the UK. The track failed to break in the US, peaking at No.76 on the Hot 100.

The second single off the album was the Akon collaboration “Sexy Bitch” (July 2009), which was followed by “One Love” (October). Two more singles were issued this year – Memories (featuring Kid Cudie) in March and “Gettin’ Over You” (featuring Chris Willis, Fergie and LMFAO).

Rihanna currently sits atop the UK singles chart with “Only Girl (In the World),” and as WelcheMusic previously reported her duet with Drake falls to No.7 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100.

Rihanna Samples Avril Lavigne on New Album

“Cheers (Drink to That),” one of the tracks on Rihanna’s latest set Loud interpolates Avril Lavigne’s 2003 hit  “I’m With You.” The song was the third hit off the Let Go album, following “Sk8er Boi.” It was also nominated for Grammies in several categories and was the first ballad to be released as a single.

“I’m With You” was No.1 in Mexico and the third track to reach the top ten in the US.  It made it to No.11 in Sweden and No.7 in the UK. “Losing Grip” was the final single to be lifted off the Let Go. Lavigne has so far issued three albums and 14 singles. In January, the singer contributed to the Alice in Wonderland soundtrack. The single, “Alice,” was a flop though and only manage to reach No.71 in the US  and No.59 in the UK. A new album is slated for release next year and it has already been announced that “What the Hell” will be the first single.

Far*East Movement Re-claims US No.1 Spot

The Asian/American electro hop group Far*East Movement knocks Rihanna off the top spot in the U.S. as “Like a G6” returns to No.1. The track topped the chart two weeks ago, but had to surrender to Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R.” Last week, Rihanna and Drake vaulted 60-1 with “What’s My Name?,” but they fall to No.7 this week. According to Billboard, such a drop from the top spot hasn’t occurred since Mariah Carey’s “Don’t Forget About Us.”

Far*East Movement appears on several chart tallies worldwide – the track has topped the charts in Belgium and New Zealand having peaked at No.2 in Australia. It bows at No.51 in the UK this week, and is currently sitting at No.45 on the UK radio airplay chart. Without airplay support, the single has little chance to make any dent on the UK charts.

Expect to see the follow-up race up the chart anytime soon. “Rocketeer” features OneRepublic’s singer Ryan Tedder who sang the vocals on Timbaland’s “Apologize.” Far*East Movement’s current album – Free Wired – also features a contribution from DJ/producer Roger Sanchez whose track “2Gether” concludes the album.
