Shayne Ward Re-Makes Nickelback Song

Originally released in September 2008, “Gotta Be Somebody” was Nickelback’s first single off its Dark Horse album. This week, the song bows at No.12 on the UK singles tally in a new version signed by former X-Factor winner Shayne Ward. The song was also covered by Bucky Covington in 2009. Ward issues the single as a preview of the album Obsession. It’s interesting to note that tracks signed by producers Darkchild and RedOne was cut. Instead, it will include a cover of The Tony Rich Project’s “Nobody Knows,” and tracks sampling Wamdue Project’s “King of My Castle” and Spin Doctor’s “Two Princes.”

Shayne Ward’s debut hit was “That’s My Goal” back in 2005. The single quickly followed that success with “No Promises” (2006), a cover of Danish singer Bryan Rice 2005 hit.

Susan Boyle’s Back on the Top

Susan Boyle manages to sell 103,000 copies of The Gift in its first week pushing last week’s No.1 – Cheryl Cole’s Messy Little Raindrops – to No.3. The first week sales still fall short of last year’s I Dreamed a Dream, which sold 412,000 copies in its first week. The debut album went on to become the biggest selling album of the year, despite being released in November according to Billboard. Produced by boy band producer Steve Mac, no single has been lifted off the album for promotion.

Boyle recently paid a visit to Oprah Winfrey’s talkshow, where she performed “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” Despite getting her breakthrough on Britain’s Got Talent, her debut album earned Boyle worldwide sales thanks to the viral YouTube success.

La Roux Takes the Help of Kanye West on Re-make

According to L.A. Times’ music blog, British electropop duo La Roux won America over this past summer with their summer anthem “Bulletproof.” The track bowed atop the UK singles tally upon its release in June 2009. It made No.8 on the Billboard Hot 100 a year later and went on selling 1.7m downloads in the U.S. alone. The single peaked at No.47 in Sweden, making it the only entry on the tally.

The group was formed in 2008 and their first release – “Quicksand” – was released by the French indie label Kitsuné Music in December that year. La Roux second single was “In for the Kill,” a No.2 hit in the UK. The track will finally be issued in the U.S in a re-worked version featuring rapper Kanye West. La Roux’s frontwoman Elly Jackson said in an interview with Pop & Hiss earlier this summer that she always had faith in the single, despite it taking quite some time to catch on with the masses. Elly Jackson returns the favour as a guest star on West’s single “All of the Lights.” The list of A-list guests includes Elton John, Rihanna, Alica Keys, Fergie, John Legend, The Dream, Tony Williams, Kid Cudie, Charlie Wilson and Ryan Leslie. The track bowed on iTunes on Nov.2.
