Will Katy Perry Return to No.1 with The One That Got Away?

Katy Perry is back with "The One That Got Away"

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Katy Perry has released yet another hit single from her Teenage Dream album. Again, Max Martin and Dr. Luke have written and produced ‘The One That Got Away’ which bows at No.22 on this week’s UK singles tally.

Just falling short of a top 20 position, Katy Perry is just behind Justin Bieber at No.21. Available in a range of remixes by the likes of 7th Heaven and JRMX,  the single has so far been unable to set the charts on fire in the US. To date, ‘The One That Got Away’ has peaked at No.94 on the Billboard Hot 100. Interesting to note, Katy Perry mashed her latest hit single with Adele’s No.1 hit ‘Someone Like You.’ See it below.

Goo Goo Dolls Back on the UK Singles Chart

 Iris No.3 in the UK
Goo Goo Dolls Returns to No.3 with Iris

CHART SPOTLIGHT. When John Rzeznik wrote the lyrics for ‘Iris,’ this was a song breaking several years of writer’s block. Written for the movie City of Angels, ‘Iris’ was initially released by Goo Goo Dolls in 1998. Despite only peaking at No.26 at the UK singles chart that year, it has amassed more than 433,000 copies sold since the release.

Tonight, ‘Iris’ returns to the singles tally at No.3. Interest for the original surged when two finalists on X Factor chose the song in last Sunday’s finalist reminding consumers of the track.

This August, Goo Goo Dolls returned with the set Something for the Rest of Us, their ninth studio album. ‘Home’ was the first single release, peaking in the top ten of the Hot AC singles tally in the US. I’m looking forward to see if this renewed interest in the Buffalo group will affect sales of their last album as it only seems to support back material. The band’s greatest this album has re-entered the iTunes top 20, where ‘Iris’ is currently atop. ‘Iris’ is featured on the album Dizzy Up the Girl, which has sold more than 3m copies globally. The set was Goo Goo Doll’s sixth.

I’ve already covered ‘Iris’ in a blog post from January 2010. It is clear that the US success was greater than in Europe and despite spending 18 weeks at No.1 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart in 1998, ‘Iris’ only made it to No.9 on the Hot 100. That’s because it wasn’t allowed to chart on the Hot 100 as it was never released as a physical single (that was long before the legal downloads). It bowed on the chart and peaked at No.9 when Billboard revised its chart policy in 1998. It, however, managed to top the Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Goo Goo Dolls debuted with their eponymous album in 1987, their first hit came in 1995 with ‘Name’ which was featured on the set A Boy Named Goo.

This Isn’t Everything You Are Next Hit Single for Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol
Snow Patrol back with album

→  Listen to the brand new remix of ‘Called Out in the Dark’!

CHART SPOTLIGHT. I’ve played Snow Patrol’s ‘Called Out in the Dark’ constantly since I blogged about the video. The group’s next single will be ‘This Isn’t Everything You Are’ and will be available on the new set Fallen Empire. Expected to bow on November 14, the album will include fourteen new tracks, blending electro guitar riffs with club friendly drums and Gary Lightbody’s touching lyrics. Gary Lightbody (singer), Nathan Connolly (guitarist), (Paul Wilson (bass), Jonny Quinn (drums) and Tom Simpson (keyboard) recorded the album in Los Angeles together with the producer Garrett ‘Jacknife’ Lee.

Inspired by U2

Fallen Empires is inspired by LCD Soundsystem’s The Sound of Silver, U2’s Achtung Baby and Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. Despite the great musical variation, Snow Patrol has stuck to its core and this is a strong follow-up to 2008’s A Hundred Million Suns and 2009’s million selling Up to Now. I still think that their classic hit ‘Chasing Cars’ is the best track from Snow Patrol. Not least because it came to new life in Grey’s Anatomy. The Snow Patrol hit ‘Run’ has also been covered by Leona Lewis.

Snow Patrol will tour the UK and Ireland in 2012, and already second shows have been added to the tour.

Maroon 5 Bows ‘Moves Like Jagger’ Remixes

Maroon 5
Maroon 5

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Make sure to check out Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s hot new remixes of ‘Moves Like Jagger.’ Both Soul Seekerz and Michael Carrera have contributed with remixes of the track. WelcheMusic initially covered this collaboration last month, highlighting that the Swede Shellback was one of the producers. Another Swede – Jonas Åkerlund – has directed the new video! According to Digital Spy, the group was endorsed by Jagger himself who also gave them access to rare footage.

The track has so far reached No.8 in the US. While being a chart-topper in Denmark it is yet to chart here in Sweden. ‘Moves Like Jagger’ was added to Maroon 5’s Hands All Over set originally issued in September 2010.
