This year’s American Idol winner Philip Philips earns a No.1 position on the current Canadian iTunes Store chart (upd. 5/27). Officially released as a download on May 23, it is set to bow on the Billboard Hot 100 in its next edition. In the US, Philip Philips has not been able to unseat Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe,’ who tops the iTunes chart ahead of Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know.’
Née Phillip LaDon Phillips, Jr. in 1990, the 21 year old singer reigns from Leesburg, Georgia. Philips won American Idol against Jessica Sanchez on the May 23 final – a total of 132 million votes were cast. On the final show, Philip Philips performed covers of Ben E. King’s ‘Stand by Me’ and Billy Joel’s ‘Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)’ in addition to ‘Home’ (a song originally written for Greg Holden, one of the co-writers).
Back to the charts, Carly Rae Jepsen and Gotye rule the Billboard Digital Song Chart as well, where Pitbull’s ‘Back in Time’ races 15-11. It’s the highest current Billboard position for the cut, which also sits at No.16 on the Hot 100 and currently charts on the Pop, Latin, Radio and Rap songs tallies.
The theme song from Men in Black III fares better on the US iTunes Store chart where it currently sits at No.4 after Philip Philips’ ‘Home.’
On the Billboard On-Demand Songs chart, Gotye rules ahead of the Maroon 5/Wiz Khalifa collaboration ‘Payphone.’
According to MTV News, had wanted to perform a song of its own, yet he was restricted by time.
