Basshunter Acquitted

CHART SPOTLIGHT. According to leading news daily Aftonbladet, Swedish singer Jonas Altberg aka Basshunter was acquitted in the sexual assault case covered by WelcheMusic last December. Two Scottish women claimed that Basshunter had harassed him, but the judge deemed their testimonies were unreliable and acquitted the Swedish singer completely.

Trial started in May

“This feels great,” says Altberg in a comment to Aftonbladet. The trial against Basshunter started this May. The two women filed the complaints last year. It turns out that the plaintiffs sold their stories to Daily Record for 500 Skr, before they even reported the incident to the police.

The Return to Big Brother

The incident has not stopped Basshunter from the spotlight. This April he returned to Big Brother as a guest. This resulted in the Swedish top ten hit “Fest i hela huset” (Party in the whole house) which peaked at No.5. This is his third biggest hit following the chart-topper “Boten Anna” and “Now You’re Gone” (which peaked at No.2). He previously took part in the UK reality show Celebrity Big Brother.

Basshunter Faces Sex Charges in Scotland

The Swedish producer and dance act Basshunter faces sex charges in Scotland. Two women have reported the 25 year old Jonas Altberg, which is his real name. His manager Henrik Uhlmann says that the allegations are completely false, in a comment in the news daily to Aftonbladet.

Basshunter got his breakthrough in Sweden back in 2006 when his debut single “Boten Anna” became a top seller. He issued five singles off his debut album LOL <(^^,)>. The English version of “Boten Anna” – “Now You’re Gone – managed to reach the No.1 spot in the UK in 2007. The track was followed by “All I Ever Wanted,” which translates “Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA” in its original. Basshunter’s last song to chart was “Saturday,” a track that samples Reel 2 Real’s 1995 hit “I Like to Move It.” The track peaked at No.21 and was never released in Sweden. It was, however, issued on the US market but failed to chart there. Earlier this year, Basshunter was a contestant on the final series of Celebrity Big Brother in the UK, ending up at fourth place.

I mean, eight UK hits since 2006 is nothing to sneeze at – even though his latest one, “I Promised Myself,” peaked at a rather low No.94. “Now You’re Gone” is by far his biggest, spending five weeks atop of the UK singles chart in January 2008.  The YouTube video has been viewed more than 76m times! The hit was followed by the No.2 hit “All I Ever Wanted.” For those not familiar with the background, “Now You’re Gone” was originally called “Boten Anna,” a giant hit not only in Sweden but in Holland as well. It was the first ever (and only!?) Swedish languaged song to reach the top of the Dutch Top 40.
