Dance with Me Tonight Unexpected UK No.1

Olly Murs
Olly Murs

Being the runner-up of X-Factor and losing the final to Joe McElderry, it seems as if Olly Murs was the successful one. Returning to No.1 with ‘Dance with Me Tonight,’ Murs has successfully placed two tracks off his latest album In Case You Didn’t Know atop of the UK singles chart.

‘Dance with Me Tonight’ is co-written by Murs, Claude Kelly (of Britney Spears, Whitney Houston and Kelly Clarkson fame) and Steve Robson (who co-wrote Take That’s ‘Shine’).

Borrowing the style and coolness of ‘60s funk-pop, ‘Dance with Me Tonight’ doesn’t fit into the 2011 template of a typical hit. Quite a feat to knock the X Factor Finalists 2011 off the top, while fending off competition from Lloyd, Rihanna and Flo Rida.

And what happened to Joe McElderry? Following his No.1 hit with ‘The Climb,’ he managed to follow-up the success with a cover of Norwegian Donkeyboy’s ‘Ambitions.’ Joe McElderry’s rendition of Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ is yet to chart despite yuletide.

On a final note, I’ve re-visited an old blog post. Last November, Olly Murs struggled with his career and fell out with his brother. Times change!

Wilson Phillips’ Hold On Sparked by Bridesmaids Bonanza

CHART REWIND. The chick flick Bridesmaids certainly paved way for renewed interest in Wilson Phillips. Further to the inclusion of the 1990 Hot 100 No.1 “Hold On,” interest has resurged in Australia, the UK and the US the past month according to Google Insights for Search.

WelcheMusic will certainly not be surprised if the trend will come to Europe as well. Swedish critics mention the song, which is instrumental in the movie.  The soundtrack also includes tracks from Blondie, Fiona Apple, Ryan Adams as well as “I’ve Just Begun (Having Fun)” by Britney Spears. The track was included on her first greatest hits album and intended for In the Zone.

“Hold On” was the debut single by Wilson Phillips, the group formed by the Wilson sisters (Carnie and Wendy) and daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys and Mamas & The Papas’s John and Michelle Phillips daughter Chynna.

The group has so far released four albums, managing to place three No.1 hits. The follow-up “Release Me” also made it to the top, as well as “You’re in Love” the following year.

Bridesmaids opened in the US this May and has so far grossed more than $234m revenue. That’s far better than the $32.5m budget. According to The Fire Wire, the DVD is set for a US September release. The packed set will include deleted sense, extended and alternate scenes as well as a “commercial” from Annie’s jewelry employer.

Swede Brings Maroon 5 & Christina Aguilera to US Top 10

Adam Levine is back with Maroon 5

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Kudos to Shellback, the Karlshamn son who graced us with super hits like P!nk’s “So What,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” and Adam Lambert’s “Whataya Want from Me.” Since his debut with Britney Spears’ “If U Seek Amy” back in 2008, the songwriter/producer have successfully collaborated with geniuses such as Max Martin.

His latest achievement is Maroon 5’s “Moves Likes Jagger.” It’s the group’s first top ten hit sin 2007’s “Makes Me Wonder,” and has so far peaked at No.8. A duet with Christina Aguilera, the track has already become a WelcheMusic favourite! Hopefully, it will continue to climb and become one of the biggest ever for the band.

Will JLS Score a No.1 with Dev & RedOne?

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Will JLS score their fifth number one with “She Makes Me Wanna”?  Featuring the US singer Dev, the track is set to be released on June 25 and is co-written and produced by Moe Faisal and Swedish RedOne. The 21-year old’s song “Booty Bounce” was sampled on Far East Movement’s “Like a G6.”

2009 Breakthrough

JLS got their breakthrough back in 2009 with “Beat Again,” a No.1 hit. It was quickly followed by the second chart-topper “Everybody in Love” which was lifted off the eponymous debut album. The third hit “One Shot” peaked at No.6, and was quickly followed by the two No.1s “The Club Is Alive” and  “Love You More.” To date, the group has released two albums – the second one being Outta This World. The latter also produced the No.8 hit “Eyes Wide Shut” featuring Tinie Tempah. JLS was the runner-ups to Alexandra Burke on X-Factor in 2008.

New arena/documentary

According to The Hype Factor, a new arena/documentary movie has premiered named JLS Eyes Wide Open 3D.  Tickets have already sold out, but more screens to the cinema was added quickly.  The A Song for Europe blog referred the track to typical “RedOne fodder and sounds like Mohombi multiplied by four with the hook of Britney Spears’ ‘Till The World Ends thrown in for good measure.”
