Will Katy Perry Return to No.1 with The One That Got Away?

Katy Perry is back with "The One That Got Away"

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Katy Perry has released yet another hit single from her Teenage Dream album. Again, Max Martin and Dr. Luke have written and produced ‘The One That Got Away’ which bows at No.22 on this week’s UK singles tally.

Just falling short of a top 20 position, Katy Perry is just behind Justin Bieber at No.21. Available in a range of remixes by the likes of 7th Heaven and JRMX,  the single has so far been unable to set the charts on fire in the US. To date, ‘The One That Got Away’ has peaked at No.94 on the Billboard Hot 100. Interesting to note, Katy Perry mashed her latest hit single with Adele’s No.1 hit ‘Someone Like You.’ See it below.

Katy Perry Gives E.T. the Remix Treatment

CHART SPOTLIGHT. The fourth single off Katy Perry’s album Teenage Dream gets the full remix treatment as a slew of remixes of “E.T.” debuts on Spotify. Released a single in mid-February, the single version features Kanye West as a guest rapper. The track is produced by Dr. Luke, Ammo and Max Martin.

It turns out that the track actually was intended for the rap group Three 6 Mafia. Ahead of the release, rumors said that “Peacock” was to be the next single off Perry’s sophomore set.  The follow-up to the US No.1 “Firework,” the track has so far peaked at No.3 on the Hot 100. It has currently topped the New Zealand singles chart, but is yet to chart in Sweden.

As “Firework” was inspired by the Jack Kerouac novel On the Road, there’s no question what cute little alien pops up when Perry sings about extraterrestrials.  The 1982 film by Steven Spielberg is one of few movies to be re-released not only once, but twice (1985 and 2002).

The Spotify remix E.P. features new versions by Tiësto, Benny Benassi, Dave Aude, Noisia and Johnson Somerset & John Monkman. When Katy Perry managed to place “Firework” atop the Billboard chart, it was the first time in eleven years that a female artist had taken three singles from one single album to the top.

Britney Spears Track Leaks

CHART SPOTLIGHT. According to Myspace, the opening track of Britney Spears’ upcoming album Femme Fatale has leaked online. “Till the World Ends” is written by Ke$ha and produced by Max Martin and Dr. Luke. Slated for release later this March, Spears’ latest set will include three tracks from the Swedish songwriter/producer Shellback.

“Till the World Ends” was initially meant for debut next week, but it will be made available via iTunes earlier. Not surprisingly, the track sounds very much like Ke$ha.

Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” rebounds 20-15 on the Swedish single tally, falls 11-12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and drops to No.38 on the UK singles chart.

(Update 13/3):  This week, Britney Spears officially climbs 55-21 on the UK singles chart with “Till the World Ends.” The track also sold 117,000 copies in its first week in the UK and debuted at No.20 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ Was Spot On

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Back in December, WelcheMusic flagged that Jessie J would become an artist to look out for in 2011. Her debut hit “Do It Like a Dude” managed to climb all the way to No.2, although it only bowed at No.25 back in November last year.

Her new single “Price Tag” features B.o.B. and is produced by mastermind Dr. Luke (currently charting with Britney). The American rapper-songwriter/producer B.o.B had already racked up no less than three UK No.1 hits with “Nothin’ On You” (feat. Bruno Mars), “Airplanes” (feat. Hayley Williams) and “Magic” (feat. Rivers Cuomo). His last single “I’ll Be in the Sky” only managed to reach No.61 in the UK chart so this a welcome return to the top.

The release of “Price Tag” also marks the debut of the simultaneous radio/retail arrival declared by Universal and Sony last month. This means that there will be no window between a track being offered to radio stations and available as a download.

Jessie J’s “Do It Like a Dude” remains a strong seller, falling 6-7 on this week’s chart. Born in March 1988, the singer’s real name is Jessica Ellen Cornish. Expect her debut album Who You Are to bow in stores at the end of March.
