JLS Dethrones Rihanna

British boyband JLS manage to do what Take That couldn’t. Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World)” falls to No.4 in the UK as “Love You More” with JLS goes straight to No.1. The group releases the new album Outta This World tomorrow, which includes their former UK No.1 “The Club Is Alive.” Built on “The Sound of Music” from the Julie Andrews 1965 film, JLS topped the charts in July with their rendition.

We’ve covered boy bands before, and this fall sets some sort of record. Take That is back, Westlife returns with new material, but it seems as if the latest acts like The Wanted and JLS sit firm atop the charts. Outta This World contains new songs produced by well-known boy band producers such as Steve Mac, Wayne Hector and Stargate.  At least, there is no change in terms of production teams.

The new No.1 – “Love You More” – also serves as the 2010 official Children in Need charity. JLS lost to Alexandra Burke in the 2008 X-Factor series.  Apart from “One Shot” in February 2010, the group’s four hit singles have all the No.1 spot in the UK. In addition, they’ve appeared on two additional chart toppers – The X Factor Finalists 2008’s rendition of Mariah Carey’s Hero and the Helping Haiti charity cover “Everybody Hurts,” that WelcheMusic covered in a previous post.

Coincidentally, JLS performed Rihanna’s “Umbrella” on X-Factor. The very same artist they dethrone this week. This September, the guys even launched their own condom range via Durex encouraging their fans to conduct safe sex.

Eminem’s No.2 Hit Biggest-Selling Single of 2010

A UK No.2 hit is the biggest selling single of 2010 – so far. Eminem’s duet with Rihanna only made it to the runner-up spot and falls to No.11 in its 15th week. Trailing Yolanda Be Cool & Dcup’s “We No Speak Americano” this summer, the rapper never managed to reach the top. But in the long run, “Love the Way You Lie” has grown to become the biggest selling hit of the year.

Jason Derulo Scores New UK No.1

Jason Derulo storms straight into the top spot with “In My Head.” Former No.1, “Everybody Hurts” falls 1-9 which means that there are lots of changes on this week’s UK Top 40. Florence + The Machine remains at No.2 with “You Got the Dirtee Love” with Dizzee Rascal, while Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” moves 6-3. The second highest new entry comes from Ellie Goulding, whose “Starry Eyed” manages to reach No.4 in its first week. Sugababes is the third new entry in the top 10 with “Wear My Kiss” at No.7.

Lady Gaga’s The Fame returns to No.1 on the album chart in its 59th week. Last week’s chart topper, Glee Cast, is pushed back to No.2 . The chart welcomes new top ten entries from Marina and the Diamonds, The Courteneers and Johnny Cash.

Helping Haiti Still on Top of UK Singles Chart

The charity constellation Helping Haiti remains on top of the UK singles chart in its second week. It is trailed by Florence + the Machine and Dizee Rascal single “You Got the Dirtee Love,” which was performed on last week’s BRIT Awards. Owl City, Timbaland & Katy Perry and Alicia Keys are pushed back one place. Rihanna moves 10-6 with “Rude Boy” in its sixth week, while the Glee Casts keep two of its singles in the top ten. “Don’t Stop Believin’” adds a tenth week on the chart and falls 5-7, while “Halo/Walking on Sunshine” remains at No.9. The only other new entry in the top ten is Lemar’s “The Way Love Goes” at No.8. Both Glee Cast’s and Lemar’s track are featured on the WelcheMusic compilation, found here. 3!OH!3 rounds up the top ten with “Startstrukk.”

Other new entries on the chart come from Chris Brown with “Crawl” at No.35.  The track is produced by The Messengers and peaked at No.53 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart when issued at the end of last year. It will get its official single release this March. Leona Lewis’ “I Got You” already made an impact on the chart as well, entering at No.40 although it won’t be offically released until tomorrow. The track was written and produced by Arnthor Birgisson, the man behind Darin’s entry in the Swedish Melodifestivalen contest. “I Got You” is the second track to be lifted from Leona Lewis’ sophomore set Happy, suceeding the title track. It’s also worth mentioning Lewis’ inclusion in the blockbuster Avatar. The lead theme “I See You” peaked at No.28 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and was written by James Horner of “My Heart Will Go On” fame. Horner’s composed the music to both Titanic and Avatar.
