Great Moments In Eurovision: France, 2008 by Guest Writer Will

CHART REFLECTION. In 2008, France brought us Sebastien Tellier, who brought us one of the greatest ever Eurovision songs, “Divine.” Sung mostly in English, Divine sparked controversy in France among politicians. Tellier was eventually allowed to compete but only after a partial French rewrite.

“Divine” is a celebration of smooth 80s synths. Tellier gently yearns for better things as his backup singers keep the song’s engine purring away, helped along by a drum machine. It’s neo-retro, gentle, sincere and immediately likeable.

On the surface, Divine was perfect for Eurovision and the Eurovision betting suggested it should do well.

But Tellier is more than just a Eurovision contestant and “Divine” is more than just a Eurovision song. It’s also the centrepiece of Sexuality, Tellier’s internationally acclaimed 2008 album. Sexuality, a Gallic celebration of flirtatious love, was produced by Daft Punk but is a closer cousin to Justin Timberlake’s oeuvre. “Divine” is the highlight. The performance in the Eurovision final matched the song.

The Black Eyed Peas currently sits firmly at No.3 on this week’s singles tally with former chart-topper “The Time (Dirty Bit),” which logs an eighth week on the chart. The current album The Beginning, however, falls 8-18 in its fifth week. The group’s first single “Fallin’ Up” was issued in 1997 but failed to chart in the UK. Black Eyed Peas’s UK chart debut came with “Joints & Jams” in 1998 – that single peaked at No.53. There first chart topper came in 2001 with “Where Is the Love?” which featured Justin Timberlake.

T.I. Brings No Mercy to the Charts

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Southern rapper T.I. is back on the charts with his seventh album No Mercy, which bows at No.4 on the Billboard 200. T.I.’s big breakthrough came in 2008 when “Whatever You Like” topped the US singles chart. The track was included on his last album Paper Trail, which also featured the duet with Rihanna – “Whatever You Like.” Interpolating the Moldavan group O-Zone’s pan-European hit “Dragostea din tei” from 2003, the song rose to fame giving T.I. his second Hot 100 No.1.

Two songs have been issued from the No Mercy set so far. “Get Back Up” failed to crossover, finally peaking at No.70.

The rapper is currently charting with the second single “Castle Walls.” WelcheMusic just love this track, which certainly gives guest vocalist Christina Aguilera justice. The singer has had a hard time repeating the success from the height of her career. We’ve also reported on her recent collaboration with Cher, whom she performs with in the movie Burlesque. So far, “Castle Walls” has reached No.99 on the Canadian Hot 100 and No.70 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In Sweden, T.I. has peaked at No.8 with “Live Your Life.” His biggest hit was the Justin Timberlake collaboration “My Love” which peaked at No.2 in 2006.
