CHART SPOTLIGHT. It looks as if the dubstep duo Nero’s ‘Promises’ is set to knock Cheryl Lloyd’s ‘Swagger Jagger’ off the top tomorrow night. The Earmilk blog premiered the ‘Promises’ already in May. The duo consists of members Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray with guest vocalist Alana. Only a few weeks ago, DJ Fresh’s ‘Louder’ topped the singles chart, further strengthening the position of dubstep.Nero is expected to bow its debut set Welcome Reality later this year.
A prolific team, Nero’s first single came in 2008 with ‘This Way.’ Signed by fellow dubstep act Chase & Status on their label MTA Records.
Nero won the 2010 Beatport Awards for Best Dubstep Act and Best Dubstep Track for ‘Act Like You Know’ back in 2009. Famous for their remixes, New Yorker Magazine’s Sasha Frere-Jones listed the Nero remix of The Streets’s ‘Blinded by the Lights’ as one of the top songs of 2009. As producers, Nero has remixed the likes of La Roux, deadmau5, N*E*R*D and Daft Punk.
According to L.A. Times’ music blog, British electropop duo La Roux won America over this past summer with their summer anthem “Bulletproof.” The track bowed atop the UK singles tally upon its release in June 2009. It made No.8 on the Billboard Hot 100 a year later and went on selling 1.7m downloads in the U.S. alone. The single peaked at No.47 in Sweden, making it the only entry on the tally.
The group was formed in 2008 and their first release – “Quicksand” – was released by the French indie label Kitsuné Music in December that year. La Roux second single was “In for the Kill,” a No.2 hit in the UK. The track will finally be issued in the U.S in a re-worked version featuring rapper Kanye West. La Roux’s frontwoman Elly Jackson said in an interview with Pop & Hiss earlier this summer that she always had faith in the single, despite it taking quite some time to catch on with the masses. Elly Jackson returns the favour as a guest star on West’s single “All of the Lights.” The list of A-list guests includes Elton John, Rihanna, Alica Keys, Fergie, John Legend, The Dream, Tony Williams, Kid Cudie, Charlie Wilson and Ryan Leslie. The track bowed on iTunes on Nov.2.
