Phil Collins Calls it Quits

CHART REWIND. Earlier this week, Phil Collins announced that he will retire. The 60- year old singer got his breakthrough in Genesis in the ‘70s, releasing his first solo album in 1981. A quick glance on the Swedish singles tally reveals that Collins managed to place two tracks at No.1 in his career. In 1981, he placed “In the Air Tonight” on top of the list only to return in 1989 when “Another Day in Paradise” made it to No.1. In total, eleven singles have charted by Phil Collins.

In terms of albums, four sets have topped the Swedish chart. It all began with Face Value (1981), followed by No Jacket Required (1985), …But Seriously (1989) and …Hits (1998).

Phil Collins have had far more successful chart runs in the US and the UK, but his career has struggled of late. In 2010, two singles were issued off his latest album Going Back. Neither “(Love Is Like a) Heatwave” nor “Going Back” made any significant impact chartwise.

WelcheMusic thinks one of his more original hits was the 2001 re-work of “In the Air Tonite.” Taken off the tribute album Urban Renewal, Lil’ Kim rapped her way through the track which peaked at No.26 in the UK and No.27 in Sweden. It was never released in the US. In 2003, rap group Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony sampled Collins’ “Take Me Home” on their hit “Home.” It finally made it to No.19 in the UK.

Robbie Williams is King of the Hill in Europe

Robbie Williams is king of the hill as his greatest hits compilation bows atop Billboard’s European Albums chart. Eminem extends his span to a third week as “Love the Way You Lie” retain the No.1 spot on the European Hot 100 Singles chart.

The Robbie Williams set also tops the German and Austrian album charts and opens strong in Ireland, Spain, Holland, Denmark, Portugal and Switzerland. Williams knocks off Phil Collins, whose Going Back falls to No.2. Rihanna leapfrogs the singles chart with “Only Girl (In the World),” which moves 30-5. It has already peaked at No.2 in Sweden and is dropping, while it’s a chart-topper in Norway and the Belgian region of Wallony.
