Don’t Mess with Jackie Brown

CHART REFLECTION. This WelcheMusic musical rendezvous takes us to 1997 and the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown. Hot on the heels of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, Tarantino returned with a movie that got just as much appreciation for its soundtrack as its many stars. Featuring cinema’s first female action star Pam Grier as Jackie Brown, the soundtrack was filled with music from the likes of Bobby Womack, Bill Withers and the Delfonics.

Grossing more than $70m, the movie was built on Elmore Leonard’s novel Rump Punch. The soundtrack peaked at No.73 on the Billboard 200, faring slightly better on the R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart where it reached No.28.

The scene above is illustrated with Randy Crawford’s “Street Life.” Pam Grier and Robert Forster is driving to the mall. Originally recorded by The Crusaders, with Crawford as the lead singer, the track topped the U.S. jazz charts for twenty weeks and was actually covered by Swingfly – famous for his Melodifestivalen participation – in the ‘90s.
