Adele Single-Handily Makes Up for Albums Dip

CHART SPOTLIGHT. According to MusicWeek, one out of ten albums sold in the UK was Adele’s. Her amazing performance helped  the whole market to survive a slump. Her 21 album still tops the UK album chart, while Adele’s debut 19 resurged in sales. In total, 2.22m copies were shifted in the first quarter resulting in a 1.5% growth year-on-year. Subtracting Adele’s figures, the record market would drop 8.7% year-on-year instead. WelcheMusic will keep a close eye on the development.

Not since Dire Straits’ 1986 set Brothers in Arms, an album has spent that many weeks atop the album chart in the UK.

Rumer Wants Forgiveness

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Née Sarah Jones in Islamabad, Pakistan, this 31 year old singer calls herself Rumer. Her name is taken from author and pen name Rumer Godden. The singer issued her debut album Seasons of My Soul last year. The set has already yielded two UK singles – “Slow” (No.16) and “Aretha.” The third cut to be issued might also be her biggest hit. “Am I Forgiven” already tops Music Week’s ranking of most played tracks on radio ahead of its release. WelcheMusic recommends anyone who likes The Carpenters to listen to her (and yes, The Guardian was first to point that out)!
