Skavlan Effect for Duffy

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Fredrik Skavlan, the talk show host with the eponymous TV show is the blessing of any pop star’s career. WelcheMusic recently highlighted the surge in sales for Cheryl Cole’s debut album following her visit to the show. The next star in line is Duffy.

The singer paid Skavlan a visit last week resulting in a 13-6 leap on the Swedish album tally. Her album Endlessly spends its eighth week on the chart, making a welcome rebound. The set bowed at No.4 last December, quickly falling out of the top ten. Her debut album Rockferry spent topped the Swedish album tally in 2008, remaining there for 72 weeks. The set spawned three hit singles:

  • “Mercy” (No.3)
  • “Warwick Avenue” (No.16)
  • “Rain on Your Parade” (No.32)

Endlessly has so far produced one hit single. “Well Well Well” spent one week at No.60. The single has fared better in Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Finland and Italy where it reached the top twenty. In January 2010, WelcheMusic highlighted that Duffy would return to the charts with a new album.

UPDATED 02-06: This week, Duffy falls back 6-8 on the Swedish album chart adding a ninth week on the chart.

Cheryl Cole Returns to the Charts with “Promise This”

CHART SPOTLIGHT. It looks as if Cheryl Cole will return to the charts at the end of this month. Scheduled for release on Oct.21, the up-tempo track “Promise This” has already begun to pick up airplay. The track bowed at No.47 on last week’s UK radio airplay chart. The song is produced by Wayne Wilkins, who was responsible for her debut hit “Fight for this Love.”

Set for release on Oct.24, Cheryl Cole will return with her second album Messy Little Raindrops. The dance-pop album was recorded in L.A. earlier this year. “Promise This” is the first single since “Parachute” reached No.5 in the UK this March. Lifted off her debut album 3 Words, Cheryl Cole managed to spawn three singles from that album.

Let’s wait and see if Cheryl Cole will return to Norwegian/Swedish talk show Skavlan.

When Can We Expect to Hear Back from Cheryl?

CHART REFLECTION. The team at WelcheMusic is thrilled that more than 10,000 visitors have read the blog post on Cheryl Cole’s visit to Skavlan. The visit fueled sales of Cole’s debut hit “Fight for this Love,” a No.2 hit in Sweden which spends its 17th week on the chart this week.

Originally issued in October 2009, Cheryl Cole’s debut set 3 Words only managed to survive two weeks on the Swedish album tally, peaking at a disappointing No.42 position. So far, the album is certified 2x platinum in the UK and Ireland peaking at No.1 and No.2 respectively.

The title track, “3 Words,” has been issued in select markets reaching platinum sales in Australia. The track was co-written and produced by Black Eyed Peas’ member will.i.am. “Parachute” was issued this March as the third single off the set, and has so far reached the top five in the UK and Ireland and the question is if a fourth track will be lifted from the album.

You might recall that the Taio Cruz track “Break Your Heart,” was originally written for Cheryl Cole as one of two tracks exclusively submitted for the 3 Words album. A Polydor label boss deemed it too similar to “Heartbreaker,” which led Cruz to record it himself resulting in a Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper.

WelcheMusic’s looking forward to hearing more from Cheryl Cole and maybe, just maybe that other Cruz track will make the singles chart. In that case, “Stand Up” will be single number four.

Update: “Fight for This Love” logged a total of 23 weeks on the Swedish single tally, finally dropping off the chart in July 2010. So far, this is the only Swedish singles chart entry to date from Cheryl Cole.

Jennifer Rush “Echoes Love”

The Swedish producer Jörgen Elofsson and the British singer Natasha Bedingfield have contributed to Jennifer Rush’s latest album Now Is the Hour. The second single “Echoes Love” could easily revive Cher’s career and is very similar to “Believe.” Unfortunately, the song has not stormed the charts and the album has only reached the top ten in Greece. Maybe we need Skavlan to include Jennifer Rush in his program in order to fuel the success.

Jennifer Rush’s biggest success to date is “The Power of Love,” a track the American German-based singer failed to break in the States. Instead, Céline Dion managed the trick as this was one of the biggest hits of 1993. The song was also made famous by late Laura Branigan.

What might come as a surprise to some of you is that the singer was born as Heidi Stern in Queens, New York. She changed her name to Jennifer Rush when she moved to West Germany in 1983.
