Tony Awards Fuels The Book of Mormon Sales

CHART SPOTLIGHT. “The Book of Mormon” re-enters the Billboard 200 album chart at No.3 following its nine Tony Awards wins. This is the highest charting Broadway cast album since 1969 when “Hair” topped the chart for 13 straight weeks.

This religious satire musical was created by the same team as “South Park.” Two young Mormon missionaries are sent to a remote village in the north of Uganda, where a brutal ruler threatens the locals. The show had its premiere on Broadway this march, following seven years of development.

The set sold 61,000 copies last week which is phenomenal. It beats the current record set by the London cast recording of “Phantom of the Opera” which sold 54,000 during the Christmas week of 1992.

Initially peaking at No.31 upon its digital release, the physical CD release came simultaneously as the musical received 14 Tony Awards nominations.
