Metronomy’s English Riviera Go Well with the French

CHART REFLECTION. We’ve fallen for the Devon-based electro group Metronomy, especially the latest album The English Riviera which was released in April this year. Despite being English, the group has had more success in France. In addition to making fab music, the group has also remixed artists such as Gorillaz, Ladytron and WelcheMusic favourite Lykke Li.

Jersey Shore 4 Goes Italy

CHART REFLECTION. Pop cultural phenomenon Jersey Shore is hitting TV screens after summer. Originally premiering on MTV in December 2009, the fourth installment will take place in Italy. The new season will premiere on August 4 and according to Zap2it, “Fists are pumped, fights are staged, drinks are downed, tongues are enjoined in extreme closeup.” Not surprisingly, the cast was banned from filming at certain tourist hot spots. The Florentian mayor Matteo Renzi has forbidden Snooki & co from appearing near the tourist attractions such as the Uffizi and Boboli Gardens.

As WelcheMusic is a true music blog, we’re anxious to see what music will appear on the show. Last year, a Jersey Shore soundtrack was issued. Enrique Iglesias shot a alternative video of  his “I Like It” and the set includes tracks from Taio Cruz, LMFAO and David Guetta.

Heated Sex Debate Divides Sweden

CHART REFLECTION. A heated debate has sparked in Sweden, following the most recent addition of the popular program Allsång på Skansen. With approximately 1.6 million viewers, the music program which is hosted by pop singer Måns Zelmerlöw featured two of this year’s most popular Swedish artists Eric Amarillo and Veronica Maggio.

Sex Controversy

So, what’s the fuss all about? Sex. Sex. And a little bit more sex. Eric Amarillo spent six wix atop the singles tally in May-June with his infectious “Om sanningen ska fram.” In English, the song says “Seriously, would you lay with me” exemplifying all kinds of sacrifices a man can do for sex. Veronica Maggio’s “Jag kommer” (I’m coming) entered the singles chart in February, yet it didn’t reach the summit until May.  It sits at No.4 on last week’s chart and covers where and how a woman can reach her climax.

Both songs have been frequently played on radio and while the lyrics might be daring, this heated debate was only heated when these artists appeared on Allsång på Skansen. According to an online poll made by leading news daily Aftonbladet, Sweden is divided. 50 percent voted against the two artists’ participation, while the other 50 percent voted for.

Ricky Martin Set the Record

As children were singing to these tunes in the audience, many viewers feared that this was far from prudent. Eric Amarillo admits that he is used to a mature audience having performed on night clubs and discos. While Veronica Maggio doesn’t really touch on the subject, only hints.

25,000 people had joined the show at Skansen which is situated at central Stockholm. The record is 32,000 people set by Ricky Martin in 2001.

Reeve Carney’s Rise Above 1 Lifts Spider-Man Musical

CHART REFLECTION. Okay, so the Broadway version of Spider-Man wasn’t a walk in the park. There have been many a headlines of the many disasters that struck the musical version of this adventure. Yet, WelcheMusic loves the track “Rise Above 1” with the lead actor/singer Reeve Carney and guest vocalists Bono and The Edge who wrote the play’s score.

Rolling Stone calls it a “soaring U2 ballad, with the elegant grandeur craned up to Andrew Lloyd Webber levels.” Referring the musical to tragicomic, Billboard says that Reeve Carney is “conventional and undercooked.” And maybe that’s we need a summer like this – a track to listen to the radio, something to just enjoy and maybe we feel a bit like Peter Parker.

The track debuted at No.74 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early June and is nowhere to be found today. It seems as if the neither consumers, critics nor radio took to this song. We think it reminds of Nickelback, Creed or any other of the crazily successful rock bands that get on US radio.

The song is about Peter Parker morphing into Spider-Man himself, and hopefully Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark can morph into the success it does deserve.
