RedOne+Jennifer Lopez=Lambada

CHART SPOTLIGHT. WelcheMusic has closely followed Jennifer Lopez career and recently reported about her collaboration with the Swedish producer RedOne. The question is – will Lopez get the Lady Gaga effect? Well, she got Pitbull anyway.

Her way back to the record aisles has been quite strenuous. There was this mishap at the Grammys when performing the 2009 single “Louboutins,” and then there was…nothing. The new single “On the Floor” borrows heavily from Kaoma’s 1989 hit “Lambada.” Mix this with Edward Maya’s “Stereo Love,” Nightcrawlers’ “Push the Feeling On” and you’ll have the new Jennifer Lopez.

Expect the track to impact in the US next week as “La Vida Lopez” joins American Idol as the new juror. Don’t expect the same level of enthusiasm as fans provided Britney Spears lately. She’s doing just fine – images from the red carpet shows her in Zuhair Murad at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards where she attended with hubby Marc Anthony. Do you remember that they recorded the duet “No me ames” on her debut album On the 6?

Jennifer Lopez’ last big song to reach the US Top 20 was “Get Right” a No.12 hit in 2005 – it even topped the UK singles chart! Will 2011 be the year when Jennifer Lopez returns to the charts?

UPDATE 03-04: Read everything about Jennifer Lopez comeback to the charts as “On the Floor” races the tallies worldwide.

Countdown to Avril Lavigne’s ‘Goodbye Lullaby’

CHART REFLECTION. WelcheMusic counts down to the March release of Avril Lavigne’s fourth album Goodbye Lullaby. The album re-unites Lavigne with the Swedish producer Max Martin. The Canadian pop star got her breakthrough in 2002 with Let Go which included the debut single “Complicated.” Lavigne’s  last album The Best Damn Thing was released in April 2007 peaking at No.1 in both the US and the UK. The set was preceded by “Girlfriend,” which became the singer’s first Billboard Hot 100 No.1.  The track was co-written and produced by Dr. Luke of Britney Spears and Ke$ha fame.

What the Hell” was commercially released earlier this month. Co-written by Avril Lavigne, Max Martin and the Swedish producer Shellback, the track was produced by Max Martin. It’s the lead single off the album and has so far reached its highest peak in Belgium (No.21). Expect it to chart in the US upon its Jan.11 release. The song was given away for free via Avril Lavigne’s Facebook page, further to its radio premiere on New Year’s Eve.

Lavigne got recognition from the r’n’b collective as Rihanna recently sampled “I’m With You” on “Cheers” which is featured on the latest album Loud. Leona Lewis also covered “I Will Be,” initially featured on Lavigne’s last album The Best Damn Thing on its limited edition. The song was released as Leona Lewis’s third single in the US.

(Update 6/2):  The track has peaked at No.13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No.6 on the Billboard Hot Digital Chart.

(Update 13/3): “What the Hell” made its debut on the UK singles chart on Jan.23. It bowed at No.29, only to fall to No.45 in the second week. This week, it reaches a new peak at No.16.

New Britney Spears Song Debuts at No.1 in 17 (!) Countries

CHART SPOTLIGHT. Britney Spears’s Hold It Against Me” got off to a rocket start when iTunes sums up sales of the track around the world. The track vaults into No.1 in no less than 17 territories. This pretty much sums up the total sales as iTunes has exclusive availability of the track during the launch.  “Hold It Against Me” has sold more than 400,000 downloads in the US alone. According to Billboard, Britney Spears expects  is expected to bow atop the all important Billboard Hot 100 next week. If Britney Spears debuts at No.1, this is the second time as “3” vaulted into the top on October 24, 2009.

Two days after the radio release, “Hold It Against Me” had already climbed to No.17 on Nielsen BDS’s pop radio ranking in terms of number of spins. In terms of audience, the track ranks No.9. The list includes 130 mainstream top 40 radio stations, all monitored by BDS.

The great news comes amidst allegations of plagiarism. The Bellamy Brothers claims that the song heavily borrows from the group’s 1979 hit “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body.” Despite allegations, David Bellamy says that he will not take action. WelcheMusic still thinks that the new Britney track sounds like E-Type in his best days. On the other hand, Mixmag claims that Britney has killed dubstep, commenting on the singers new route.

Britney’s New Single Leaks

CHART SPOTLIGHT. No, we won’t hold it against you Brit. A demo of Britney Spears’s latest single “Hold It Against Me” featuring the singer/songwriter Bonnie McKee was leaked online earlier today. Picked up by the mainstream media and the blogosphere, WelcheMusic thinks the song is nothing short of phenomenal.

Or, in our ears it sounds a lot like ‘90s euro techno pop à la Sweden – think Da Buzz and E-Type. Pair that with contemporary dance techno such as Tim Berg. Back to Spears – “Hold It Against Me” is produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin and written by McKee herself.

Bonnie McKee has recently collaborated on compositions such as Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream” as well as Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite.”
